Summer Albums: Past & Present

With the summer months rapidly approaching I have, for whatever reason, decided to compile a list of “summer albums” dating back to my junior high school career. These are not necessarily universal summer albums, nor did I intend for them to be summer albums at the time. Many of them were probably not even released in the summer. They are simply CDs that were overplayed in either of my Jettas from May-September (or in my personal CD player in the case of the early years). Chances are, if you frequented the passenger seat of my car in past years, these albums may be ingrained in your memory also.

Basketball Comeback

Made my basketball comeback yesterday. The geeks over at Comcast challenged Gametapes to a game because they were talkin trash on my boy Jon, who played at Gonzaga. Anyway, I came into the game and blocked the hell out of this guy’s shot. He thought he could shoot over me (we were about the same height) and I absolutely threw that thing back out of bounds. Other than that I grabbed quite a few rebounds and threw up an air ball. I am probably going back into retirement.

Fire it Up

So I got a chance to go to the album release show for Modest Mouse’s new record We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank last night and it was totally awesome. My friend Darren from work won tickets and was going to go with my boss Gabe, but then Gabe decided to go home at the last minute. First of all, the new record is so good and the songs are rad live. From what I remember their set consisted of:

The Ocean Breathes Salty
Fire it Up
Black Cadillacs
Bukowski
Paper Thin Walls
Dashboard
Missed the Boat
Doin’ the Cockroach
Float On
Tiny Cities Made of Ashes

a bunch more I don’t remember

and then they closed with Spitting Venom off the new record which sounded so huge and was a perfect closer.

So yeah, awesome record, awesome show, awesome band.

Starbucks

The Starbucks in Covington next to Taco Del Mar is featuring a wall of Andrew’s photography for the whole month of March. Get over there and check it out…yours truly makes an appearance.

“I was definitely thinking we were going to flip - these things are known for that you know.”

Pretty awesome how you can be cruising along comfortably at 50mph one second, and the next thing you know you are completely sideways, sliding out of control off the side of the road. Andrew and I are driving over to Richland this morning and we are ascending the Snoqualmie pass in his mother’s 1997 Toyota 4-Runner with no CD player, and all of a sudden we are sliding to the left while the car is rotating right. Not much you can do in a situation like that except hope for the best.

So we slide off the left side of the road where it starts to slope down…and since we are sideways at this point, I am thinking there is a good chance that we are going to roll over and our whole trip would be cancelled and Andrew would be in debt forever. Luckily we did not tip over, and once we got in a bit of a rut off the side of the road the car straightened out and came to a halt about 10 feet before a barrier.

Andrew: “I had it under control. I wouldn’t mind doing it again actually!”

Student hurt by cannon blast at football game. Receives numerous threats.

“Brett Karch, an ROTC student, almost lost his leg due to a cannon explosion at a football game. The town’s reaction? Threaten to break his other leg if the story gets out to the media causing them to possibly lose their ritual shooting of the cannon during football games, sick.”

Gametapes shot this game and I got an email the following morning from my boss saying:
“Camera 2 got a cannon blowing up some ROTC dude… AD will be coming by in the morning to pick up DVD labeled ‘10.6.06 Snohomish FB Pre-game.’ Police have been also trying to track down a copy…”

lol.
